Organic Rooibos Tea
What is rooibos tea?
Rooibos (red bush) tea is gaining popularity as a delicious and healthy drink. Consumed in South Africa for hundreds of years, it is a great alternative to black and green tea because it does not contain caffeine. This means that it can be drunk at any time of the day and pregnant women can drink it without any contraindications.
Rooibos tea is a great alternative to black and green tea.
Rooibos is not technically a tea, as it does not contain any Camellia sinensis leaves; it is an infusion harvested from the rooibos bush, or should we say Aspalathus linearis if we are speaking in botanical terms. Grown exclusively in South Africa's Cederberg Mountains, the rooibos bush is a modest 1-2 metres tall, but its roots reach up to 20 metres deep to reach the water in the arid red soil in which it grows.
How rooibos is produced?
There are two types of rooibos: red and green. Red is the more common of the two and undergoes a similar process to black tea. The needle-shaped leaves are harvested, cut, crushed, oxidised and dried in the sun, which gives rooibos its characteristic reddish brown colour (hence the name "red bush tea") and malty flavour. Rooibos is also known as "red bush tea".
Green rooibos undergoes a process more akin to that of green tea: the leaves are heated to prevent oxidation, achieving the same fresh, green flavour profile.
Green rooibos has a very similar taste profile to green tea.
Rooibos does not contain caffeine.
Like all our fruit and herbal infusions, except for the fat burning and fasting infusions which contain green tea and yerba mate, rooibos is caffeine free. So, if you're simply looking for something delicious to drink from dawn to dusk, without fear of losing sleep, or if you're avoiding caffeine, due to pregnancy, for example, rooibos may be an ideal choice. Rooibos may be an ideal choice.
Prepare the perfect cup of rooibos.
As rooibos contains no tea, there is no tannic bitterness associated with over-infusion. We recommend using double the amount (about 2 teaspoons per cup) and fresh, boiled water, then infuse for at least 3 minutes to get as much flavour as possible in the cup. If you wish, you can add a little milk, just as you would with a black tea.
What's so special about Replantea Rooibos?
Like all Replantea teas and infusions, the rooibos we use in our blends is grown using natural, environmentally friendly cultivation methods. Our organic rooibos is oxidised just enough to achieve a balanced, slightly sweet but never bitter taste.
